[Official] Homework assignments
Dear students,

The first homework assignment is up; the deadline is Sunday, May 3rd (at midnight, but really 00:05 of May 4th). It is shorter than later ones (only 50 points in total) and is meant to get you thinking about probability.

The following link will always point to the latest assignment:
https://kwarc.info/teaching/AI/assignment.pdf

The collection of all assignments, with solutions for past ones, will always be at this address:
https://kwarc.info/teaching/AI/assignments.pdf

In addition I’m also attaching it to this post. Shortly, I will add the assignment to the tutorial groups on StudOn. Submit your solutions on StudOn - you can check with your tutor if they have any preference for the format. Please pick only one tutorial to submit all your assignments to.

Last semester we had more cases of copying than we would have liked. Note that if the tutor grading an assignment notices that a solution is clearly a copy (say, of an old solution, or another student’s assignment), they might decide to not give points for that problem.

Cheers,
Katja

Dear students,

The second homework assignment is up; the deadline is Sunday, May 10th. This one contains a problem that we will not grade, but will have a reference solution. You do not need to submit a solution to this problem (the one with 0pt). Some of these ungraded problems will be used in the exam, perhaps with small modifications.

The following link will always point to the latest assignment:

The collection of all assignments, with solutions for past ones (posted after the deadline), will always be at this address:

Assignment 4 points update
Dear students,

There was an error in the number of points for a part of assignment 4 that I now fixed. The usual files on kwarc.info have been updated correspondingly. I also published the solutions for assignment 3.

Cheers,
Katja

Programming assignment - Bayesian networks
Dear students,

I just uploaded assignment 6, worth 100 points. Please note the irregular deadline: Friday, June 12th (in a little over two weeks). To compensate for parallel assignments, the 5th and 7th one are (going to be) shorter.

Comment on Assignment 4
A fairly common situation appeared in the submissions for 4.1., questions about noisy and deterministic nodes. Both noisy and deterministic nodes have the condition that the parents are a complete list of causes as modelled (not the same as in the real world). The difference is in how the value depends on the parents.

The example in the lectures for a deterministic node was “European”, where the model assumption was that that all possibilities for being an EU citizen were being Greek, German or French. The formula for the value of European was a logical disjunction of the parents.

In the lectures for example, the model for the fever assumes that the complete list of possible causes is the cold, the flu, and malaria, and that none of these always causes a fever (there is an inhibition factor). Noisy nodes are thus not about there being other possible causes (as far as the model is concerned), but about causes not always resulting in symptoms (the flu doesn’t always give you a fever).

Dear students,

I just uploaded assignment 9. The deadline is Sunday, June 21st. The first problem will not be graded. The second problem looks long, but is mostly a problem description, do not despair!

Note on Assignment 8
It can be hard to remember which way the transition matrix in a Markov process is turned around, so here is how: the rows should sum up to 1.

Hello,

just a short question, will assignment 13 be the last assignment for AI-2?

Thanks!

There will be a bonus assignment 14 on neural networks (python implementation) this Friday, and possibly a short one on language after that.

Assignment 14 will be counted in the same way as the bonus challenges (“bonus bonus points”). This means that you will get the points from it, while the points will not contribute towards the total possible points from assignments.

Dear students,

the bonus assignment (assignment 14) is now available (https://kwarc.info/teaching/AI/assignment.pdf). You can get 100 bonus-bonus-points on this one so plenty of opportunity to make up for missed points. The deadline is July 29th.

Grading will be automatic so please make sure to submit exactly as specified, using the files provided for you. Good luck!

Best

Max
