Student Assistant/Internship - Development of system level simulator to investigate 5G/6G systems

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around
30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros.

Fraunhofer IIS is developing a system level simulator to evaluate 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) systems. The purpose of the simulator is to investigate and quantify the impact of different system parameters that will vary spatio-temporally in an NTN system using different performance indicators. The simulator includes all the functionalities of 5G protocol stacks that are currently being adapted to support non-terrestrial components such as satellite channel models, mobility models etc. The simulator relies on the OMNeT++ framework. OMNeT++ is a discrete event based simulator used for network simulations, which includes a C++ kernel and class libraries for building different components called modules. It has an infrastructure to assemble these components and configure it to run a system level simulation.

You are interested in the field of satellite systems and new scenarios and would like to help us with further development of the simulator?
Then have a look at our offer!

What you will do

  • You understand the existing simulator framework
  • You develop different modules needed for a 5G and beyond systems with focus on satellite systems
  • You define mobility movements and enhance visualization
  • You integrate the simulator as a backend to a web based frontend

What you bring to the table

  • You are interested in satellite communications
  • You have a basic understanding of LTE/NR protocols
  • You are experienced in common programming languages such as Python, shell scripting and C/C++
  • You have experience working with OMNeT framework (advantageous)
  • You are familiar with MS Office and/or LaTeX

What you can expect

  • An open and cooperative working environment
  • Collaboration in interesting and innovative projects
  • Many opportunities to gain practical experience
  • Flexible working hours
  • Varied tasks with room for creativity
  • Exciting seminars and events
  • Networking with scientists

Weekly working hours are determined by agreement. You can start from now on (as a student assistant from 10 to 20 hours a week or as an intern for a period of at least three months). You can reduce your hours before exams and increase them during semester breaks. You can flexibly determine the working days. After your studies, you have the option of working with us full or part time.

About us
Fraunhofer IIS with its department »RF and Satellite Communication Systems« has a strong background in design, implementation, and test of RF and microwave systems. Moreover, we also focus on high speed signal processing platforms for RF communications. Our experience includes satellite communication system design and implementation considering the entire physical layer signal processing in the analog and digital domain by means of VHDL firmware and software. Our special focus is on reaching cutting-edge performance, applying and investigating latest techniques and system concepts, and developing challenge- or customer-specific solutions.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees’ skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process.
