Tips for working on cases
I received several emails about last week’s homework and I’d like to share the tips with everyone.

Part of the work in this course is determining the most applicable method of analysis based on the scenario and the facts available to you. This is why we say that the class is difficult. It isn’t about simply knowing how to do different methods of analysis, but also to use the situation to determine which analysis (or analyses) will best support the business decision. When choosing an analysis, consider if there is some information - not necessarily provided directly in the case, but which can be derived from the information available - which would significantly affect or invalidate the analysis you are considering conducting.

Remember that material which is presented as an opinion is an opinion, not a fact. To prepare a case, you must identify problems (which may not be the ones posed by the case) and learn how to pick out relevant data (which may be hidden in irrelevant details). The reason cases are written this way is to simulate reality, where there will often be a lot of confounding factors. The most general question is “What should the business do?” and you should consider yourself in the protagonist’s position, writing a report for your superiors and/or peers.
